The Emporia High Class of 1962 honored one of its own as part of ongoing improvements near the school’s outdoor bell.
On Thursday, the class formally dedicated a bench in memory of the late Roger Hartsook. Class spokesman Dick Rees says Hartsook played a pivotal role in the bell project.
Besides moving the bell just south of the main entrance, the class has also installed a square of paving bricks around the bell after class member Richard James paid for them. Thursday also saw a bench installed honoring the entire Class of 1962.
Hartsook served at times as KVOE’s news director, advertising representative, play-by-play voice and on-air personality for better than five decades before he retired in 2016. Hartsook passed away last October due to complications of COVID-19 at age 76.
