The Lyon County Commission has finalized its operational budget for the 2022 fiscal year.
Commissioners approved the budget during their most recent meeting Thursday morning with a unanimous vote. The 2022 budget totals just over $34 million with a mill levy rate of 54.141 which is a decrease of 1.5 mills from fiscal year 2021.
In addition to approving the budget, commissioners also approved a motion to exceed the revenue-neutral rate which is the difference between current and past year valuations and does not allow “taxing entities” to have an increase in dollars in the coming fiscal year unless a resolution is passed to exceed the RNR by the governing body. The county’s 2022 budget is $87,000 more than the previous year according to Commission Chair Rollie Martin.
Martin says there are three key factors to the increase.
In other business, commissioners approved a series of clerical amendments to its agreement with A1 Pump & Jet for a planned expansion. According to Martin, A1 has already submitted an application to the state of Kansas for a Community Development Block Grant to fund the expansion and move.
Word on the application’s status is expected in the fall.
The reasoning for the partnership between the county and A1 the county is that businesses such as A1 cannot access CDBG funding, only public entities — cities, municipalities or counties — can apply for CDBG funding. Essentially, the county will act as a pass-through for the funding and would have no financial liability if the project were not to pan out.
The Lyon County Commission will reconvene for its weekly action session next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse.
