An Emporia man was killed when his car hit a horse on Kansas Highway 99 near the Lyon-Greenwood county line early Wednesday.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says the callto the 100 block of Highway 99, less than two miles north of the county line and about five miles south of Olpe, came around 5:45 am. The investigation shows 28-year-old Corey Robinson was southbound when he hit a horse on the highway. Robinson’s car went into a ditch and hit a tree.
Both Robinson and the horse were pronounced dead at the scene. Robinson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Deputies, Emporia/Lyon County EMS and Olpe first responders worked the crash site. Highway 99 traffic was either partially or totally closed for over two hours after the wreck.

Emporia Fire/EMS and Lyon County deputies responded to the junction of Kansas Highway 99 and Road 20 shortly before 6 am. Crash details are currently pending.
Highway traffic was affected for about two and a half hours but is now back to normal after the Kansas Department of Transportation flagged drivers past the crash zone. We’ll have updates on KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media.
