Emporia Police are investigating several threatening calls to local businesses and organizations.
Capt. Ray Mattas says the department has received calls from an unspecified number of locations just since Wednesday night. The threats vary from business to business, but they are all apparently coming from the same phone number. The investigation, which has also involved several unnamed law enforcement partners, indicates the calls are all apparently coming from out of state.
Emporia Public Schools has confirmed a threatening call was made to Maynard Early Childhood Center early Thursday, so the district followed lockdown procedures for the building and canceled the school’s morning preschool session. Community Relations Director Lyndel Landgren says officers determined it was safe to return to the building shortly before 10:30 am, so the afternoon classes will be held as scheduled and the district is asking parents to send their students to school.
Mattas says the calls do not appear to have credible threats to people, businesses or organizations receiving them. However, officers will continue to investigate. Mattas encourages anybody receiving a threatening call to file a report with Emporia Police.
