Modest increases occurred nearly across the board in Lyon County Public Health’s latest COVID-19 report.
Public Health reported 26 new cases Friday bringing the overall total to 4,835 cases since late last March. 24 recoveries were also reported between Wednesday and Friday increasing the active total by two from 102 to 104.
Of those active cases, 15 are considered breakthrough meaning infections in fully vaccinated individuals. Of those 15, 8 received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, 6 received Moderna and 1 received Pfizer.
Overall, Public Health has identified 117 breakthrough cases with 34 vaccinated with the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, 59 with Moderna and 24 with Pfizer.
Deaths remained unchanged at 88, however, active hospitalizations increased from six to seven.
The USD 253 Emporia COVID-19 dashboard is also seeing significant increases in most categories. Over the past week, the number of new staff positives increased by four to 14 while staff quarantines also increased by three to 10. The number of positive cases in students also saw an uptick with 22 new cases bringing the yearly total to 50. The number of students in home quarantine due to exposure to the virus increased sharply by 58 to 112 with 172 students in modified quarantine up 76 from last week. 55 vaccinated students have returned to school after exposure to COVID-19.
Neither USD 251 North Lyon County nor USD 252 Southern Lyon County have activated an online dashboard.
Emporia State University has announced nine positive cases among 179 COVID tests between Aug. 23 and Friday. Flint Hills Technical College, meanwhile, is reporting three active cases and two active quarantines. The college has had five total cases so far this semester.
There will be no dashboard Monday with Public Health closed due to Labor Day, meaning there will also be no contact tracing or patient notifications on Monday. Public health says residents who are aware of COVID-positive results from outside testing should stay isolated until contact investigations resume Tuesday.
Lyon County is moving back up the COVID County Rankings as outlined by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. In Wednesday’s report, Lyon County was 12th, up from 18th Monday. The county is now 12th in vaccination rate, 28th in cases per 100,000 residents and 59th in testing per 100,000 residents. Morris County is second areawide and 12th overall total, while Coffey County is last areawide and 64th overall.
With the Food and Drug Administration nearing final approval of third booster shots this month, Lyon County Public Health is asking residents to take a one-page survey to gauge interest in a third dose. We have a link to the survey available below.
