Labor Day is typically a time to relax, but a lot of Americans have extra stress this holiday because federal jobless benefit programs connected to the coronavirus pandemic are no more.
All three of the federal government’s major programs — Federal Pandemic Unemployment, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation and Pandemic Unemployment Assistance — are over as of the Labor Day weekend. The plans were first authorized under the CARES Act of 2020 and extended through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.
Starting this week, the state’s Regular Unemployment Insurance will be the only jobless program available in Kansas.
This comes with the federal moratorium on evictions expiring several weeks ago. Other federal assistance programs, including the expanded Child Tax Credit monthly payments and the expanded SNAP or food stamp program, are ongoing.
