Progress continues on downtown Emporia’s repaving project.
Crews milled down Commercial Street’s prior pavement Monday through Thursday. Friday saw those crews begin the overlay process.
Work is moving south from 12th to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe crossing. For Friday, traffic cannot go from 12th to Commercial.
The project will also include Sixth Avenue between Mechanic and Neosho. The project should continue through October, weather permitting.
Noon Thursday: Milling process nearly over on Commercial Street
The resurfacing project in downtown Emporia is off to a good start.
Crews have fully milled Commercial Street from 12th to near the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks. Paving will then take place on that stretch of road later.
Coming up will be a similar process affecting Sixth Avenue between Mechanic and Neosho.
This is part of a better-than $620,000 city-state partnership to repave these streets. The Kansas Department of Transportation is funding $300,000 and the city is handling the rest.
Work is ongoing through the daylight hours through October, weather permitting, so both traffic and parking adjustments are expected. There will be occasional traffic detours from Commercial to Merchant, and Commercial may see total shutdowns on an isolated basis as the project continues.
