The Kansas Highway Patrol has offered more details about a situation Saturday involving a crash, foot pursuit and transfer between hospitals in Emporia and Topeka.
The Highway Patrol says 46-year-old Jose Membreno of Lake Forest, California, was southbound on the Kansas Turnpike about 10 miles northeast of Emporia when his car left the highway to the shoulder a bit after 5:30 pm. Membreno came back across both traffic lanes, hit the barrier wall and then went back across the highway into a ditch.
Troopers say Membreno left the scene, was briefly contained by passersby and then left again when law enforcement arrived. Once he was in custody, an ambulance took him to Newman Regional Health for initial treatment. Membreno was later transferred to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka for suspected serious injuries.
Troopers have not said whether Membreno may face arrest for allegedly leaving the scene.
