A significant part of Emporia’s medical history is up for sale.
The Hillcrest Apartments at 400 West 15th is now on the market. The better-than 70,000 square-foot building currently has 34 apartment units ranging from efficiencies to 3 bedrooms along with 35 parking spaces and nearly two acres of total land on the property.
Built in 1928, the Hillcrest was the longtime home of St. Mary’s Hospital, which actually started operations in 1884 through the Sisters of St. Francis in Lafayette, Indiana, according to the Catholic Health Association, and moved to 400 West 15th shortly after construction. The hospital closed in 1991 after several years of substantial financial losses.
The property, listed through Ek Real Estate, is on the market for $1.9 million. Paul and Debi Challender own the property.
