There is still better than a month left before the project needs to be finished out, but the bulk of the repaving work on parts of Commercial Street and Sixth Avenue in downtown Emporia is done.
Crews have paved Commercial from the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks as well as Sixth from Mechanic to Neosho. Permanent striping remains along with potentially some touch-up work at connecting side streets.
That project is part of a nearly $630,000 city-state partnership to repave significant portions of Kansas Highway 99 and US Highway 50 in downtown Emporia.
Meanwhile, the Mechanic Street underpass remains closed as the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad bridge gets renovated. Neither the railroad nor the contractor have announced when that project should be completed. Mechanic is closed from Second to Fourth as that project continues.
