The Kansas Attorney General’s Office and Drug Enforcement Agency have a drug take-back day this weekend, but there will not be a formal event in Emporia this time around.
Local law enforcement agencies are not involved in an official drug take-back event this year. Official reasons have not been divulged.
The event is touted as a pre-emptive way to reduce prescription drug-related crimes and combat the developing opioid crisis on one hand while protecting the water supply from contaminants on the other. The Attorney General’s Office says nearly 10 million people misused prescription pain relievers, five million misused prescription stimulants and 6 million misused prescription tranquilizers as part of results from the 2019 National Survey on Drug and Health Use.
If you have unwanted prescriptions you want to be disposed of by the DEA, you can drop those off at Emporia’s CVS or Walmart pharmacies. The closest law enforcement site for Saturday’s take-back effort, at least as listed on the Attorney General’s Office, is the Osage County Sheriff’s Office in Lyndon.
