Coronavirus case activity has stabilized in Lyon County, but not quite at the levels desired by Lyon County Public Health.
Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern had an update on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Thursday.
To no surprise, caseload activity has increased among younger residents since the academic year started in August.
Millbern would like the new case numbers — around 60 per week — to be below 16 per week and, under optimal circumstances, under 5 a week instead.
College-age students ages 18-23 have led the new caseload by age group for months, and there are now over 900 total cases in that age range. Only three cases are currently active. For younger residents, there are 377 total cases between newborn and age 17 with 22 active cases. For adults, the 30-39 age group leads caseload activity with 823 total cases. The 40-49 age group leads active cases with 15.
Millbern says Public Health wants to enter the holiday period starting with Halloween with lower caseloads and transmission rates. Last year, there was a massive spike in new and active cases from Halloween to Thanksgiving, with as many as 456 positive cases logged the week of Nov. 15 and as many as 680 active cases Nov. 18.
