The pace of COVID-19 vaccinations hasn’t been robust for months, and the current percentages of unvaccinated residents per county has several public health officials concerned about what may develop.
Areawide, Lyon County leads at 59.5 percent of vaccine-eligible residents fully vaccinated, while Chase County is on the other end at 45.6 percent — meaning 40 to 55 percent of residents by county are unvaccinated.
Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern says this opens the door to stronger variants than the delta variant, which has dominated the picture since late spring.
Millbern says 70 percent would be a good vaccination goal.
Off the vaccination topic, Millbern encourages residents to keep wearing masks and using six-foot social distancing bubbles while out in public, especially with Halloween activities in abundance this upcoming weekend. She also says increased ventilation and an emphasis on small gatherings will help when it comes to COVID protection.
