It’s good to be the People’s Choice, and Visit Emporia earned that honor at the recently-completed Kansas Tourism Conference.
Visit Emporia Director LeLan Dains says the agency claimed first place in the Medium Budget Community Awareness category for its repurposing of newspaper stands into visitor guide stands. That entry also gained the People’s Choice honor.
Visit Emporia has one repurposed newspaper stand outside the Trusler Business Center so people can pick up free visitor guides while the building is closed. A second repurposed newspaper stand is completed, although a location has not yet been finalized. Dains says there are plans for more down the road. Dains also says a refreshed visitors guide will be coming early next year. Visit Emporia is also creating field guides highlighting Emporia’s disc golf and gravel cycling options.
Visit Emporia and its predecessor, the Emporia Convention and Visitors Bureau, have consistently received honors at the Kansas Tourism Conference. Dains credited former CVB director Susan Rathke and longstanding co-worker Kelly Mayer for the agency’s ongoing success at the state level.
