An investigation is underway after Emporia Police responded to a bomb threat in far west Emporia early Monday evening.
Police were called to the Flying J rest stop at 4215 West Highway 50 shortly after 6 pm after an employee called stating an unknown number had called the establishment claiming there was a bomb hidden somewhere in the store. According to Emporia Police Officer Kenny Rodriguez, employees evacuated the truck stop and Huddle House restaurant prior to police arriving on scene.
Once there, Rodriguez says EPD conducted three walk-throughs of the building, one to ensure all customers and staff were out, one to sweep for any suspicious devices or packages and a once more with a store manager to make sure nothing “seemed out of place.” No devices or suspicious packages were found and police gave the all clear for staff and patrons to return to the building just over an hour after arriving.
Officers are currently investigating the incident. Little information is available, however, the employee claimed the voice on the line was a male individual.
Further details are pending. If you have any information about the incident you’re asked to contact Emporia Police by calling 343-4200.
