A special recount is underway, in Lyon County, for the USD 251 school board race between Tammie Reed and Perry Peterson.
Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat joined the KVOE Morning Show Wednesday morning with the announcement that Reed — who lost to Peterson by one vote (133-132), following the vote canvas — had requested a recount. Vopat says in a race that close, a recount is not a surprise. She says a board of three people, appointed by her, are currently recounting the ballots.
Vopat says the Board of Canvassers will reconvene at 4 pm to certify the results of the recount.
The recount comes after the County Board of Canvassers finalized the results during the official vote canvas inside the Lyon County Courthouse Tuesday morning. The final voter turnout was 25.59 percent with 5,256 total ballots cast.
74 ballots were marked as provisional, 61 of which were approved with 13 not counted as the voters were not registered in Lyon County. Three mail ballots were also considered provisional, one of which was counted while two were thrown out due to the voters not being registered.
The official results saw no change in the election standings for any races in Lyon County. Overall, Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat says it was a “smooth” election cycle.
While she says she would have liked to see a higher turnout at the polls, Vopat says the more than 25 percent turnout is showing moderate improvement for local elections in the county.
