With the biggest food day of the year coming Thursday, the Lyon County Extension Office is reminding residents to include safety in their holiday planning.
Extension agent Emily Prouse, a recent guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 segment, tells residents if they have bought a turkey for Thanksgiving this year they need to begin thawing it out now. Prouse says when it comes to properly defrosting a turkey there are a few methods including placing it on a tray and allowing it to thaw in the refrigerator over the course of several days.
She says residents can also use a “water bath” method to thaw out their Thanksgiving birds, however, while it is quicker, home cooks will need to be more attentive with this method.
Prouse also says it is not recommended to stuff your turkey or buy a pre-stuffed turkey as it is difficult to gauge whether or not the stuffing has been properly cooked.
Once your meal is complete, Prouse says there are some other helpful tips to help ensure you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast, without overdoing it.
