The Emporia State basketball teams picked up wins over Newman Wednesday night.
The Lady Hornets outscored Newman 71-57. Newman jumped out to a 9-0 lead before Emporia State went on a 12-4 run to cut the deficit to 13-12 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Lady Hornets led 25-21 at halftime. It was the 3rd quarter that Emporia State threw on a fullcourt press and outscored Newman 30-11 to take a lead they would not give up. Coach Toby Wynn says the 3rd quarter press was the difference in the game.
Tre’Zure Jobe led all scorers with 24 points. Kali Martin and Karsen Schultz both scored 11 points.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improve to 6-3 for the season and 1-2 in the MIAA.
The Emporia State men jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed on the way to a 75-62 win over Newman. The Hornets also used a 17-3 run in the 2nd half to turn a 3 point lead into a 17 point lead. Hornet Coach Craig Doty the run was started by the defense.
All 5 starters scored in double-figures led by Tray Buchanan with 26 points.
Jumah’Ri Turner added 13 points. Mayuom Buom and Peyton Rogers-Schmidt both scored 11 points and Kaden Evans finished with 10 points.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 7-2 for the season and 2-1 in the MIAA.
