The Emporia Fire Department is preaching vigilance this holiday season and even more so now following a destructive structure fire Sunday.
Emporia Fire Marshall Reason Bradford joined KVOE’s Newsmaker segment recently to discuss the importance of holiday fire safety. Bradford says there are a number of fire hazards associated with the holiday season including heating appliances being used in abundance, extension cords being run throughout homes and decorations covering the vast majority of most residences.
Another important potential hazard are Christmas trees according to Bradford. He says it is vitally important that residents not neglect the state of a tree and ensure it is properly hydrated at all times.
Bradford also says it is important to be mindful of what is around the tree such as candles, heating appliances and any other devices that could spark a fire.
Bradford’s guidance comes just a day after a destructive fire at the one-time Hornets Pointe apartment complex Sunday and at a time where critical fire danger, a rarity for this time of year, has been a constant concern.
