Two teenagers and two other children were hurt in a crash just southeast of Emporia late Sunday night.
Lyon County Deputy Brandon Early says the crash was reported in the 1200 block of Road 160, near Sacred Heart Cemetery, shortly after 10:30 pm. The driver, 16-year-old Itzel Avalos-Tellez of Emporia, was northbound when she failed to make a curve. Her SUV left the road, overturned and stopped against a tree.
Avalos-Tellez and all three passengers — 11-year-old Jose Tellez-Arteaga, 8-year-old Quetzalli Tellez-Duarte and 13-year-old Fernando Rodriguez, all of Emporia — were taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health with unknown injuries. Rodriguez was the only one not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Early says speed was a contributing factor in the wreck. The investigation continues at this time.
