A decision on formal charges in a recent case of local vandalism will likely come next week.
Emporia Police announced the arrest of 19-year-old Isaac Lawrence on Wednesday after several alleged incidents of vandalism at several local buildings, including Emporia High, Emporia State’s Visser Hall, Casey’s West and Sonic. Police Capt. Ray Mattas says additional damage was found at Emporia High, pushing the alleged crime from a misdemeanor to a felony — and shifting potential charges from Emporia Municipal Court to Lyon County District Court.
Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman says it will be Monday at the earliest before formal charges could be filed.
The alleged vandalism consisted of spray-painting. Several swastikas were noted among the vandalism, but Mattas says the early investigation has determined the alleged crimes were not hate-based or bias-based.
