Work to expand a portion of US Highway 50 west of Emporia has wrapped up, however, the Kansas Department of Transportation is not done with road improvements to the local area.
During an interview on KVOE’s Morning Show Tuesday, KDOT Engineer Steve Baalman stated the project as part of the Eisenhower Legacy Transportation (IKE) Program to expand Highway 50 from two to four lanes between Roads E-5 and F was largely completed just ahead of Christmas aside from some minor cleanup and repair work.
At this time, Baalman says there are no plans to further expand Highway 50, however, KDOT does have another improvement project planned for a separate major highway later this year.
A timeline for that project is currently pending.
The Highway 50 expansion was originally supposed to take place in 2011 as part of the 10-year, $8 billion TWORKS program under Sam Brownback’s administration. TWORKS has since been replaced by the IKE Program.
