The Lady Spartans outscored Manhattan in every quarter en route to a 55-28 victory Tuesday night.
After a pair of ties to start the game, Emporia High would pull away from the Indians thanks to a 7-2 run to close out the first quarter. The Lady Spartans would hold outscore Manhattan 28-13 in the second half and held the Indians to single points in the third and fourth quarters to pick up their fourth win of the season.
Emporia was led in scoring by senior Gracie Gilpin with 16 points. Junior Rebecca Snyder added 11.
Tuesday’s victory was the 100th career win for head Coach Carolyn Dorsey. Dorsey says it’s a win she’ll cherish.
The Lady Spartans now improve to 4-2 on the season.
In the boy’s game, a late Spartan rally would come up short as Manhattan defeated Emporia High 59-44.
The teams would be even at 10 at the end of the first before the Indians would use a 10-0 run midway through the second to build a lead they would never give up.
Emporia would come as close as seven to tying the game late in the fourth but they could never retake the lead. Coach Beau Welch says it was a tale of two games.
Emporia High had two players in double figures. Freshman River Peters finished the night with 11 points while sophomore Sheldon Stewart added ten.
With the loss Emporia now falls to 0-6 on the season. Both teams will be back in action Friday when they travel to Junction City.
