Travel conditions improved across the KVOE listening area as Thursday progressed, and more improvement is expected Friday.
The day started with light snowfall, mainly three inches or less across the area. That caused slick conditions, especially for the morning commute, and prompted city, county and KDOT crews to start treating and blading roads as early as 3 am. By late afternoon, improvement was evident and travel is pretty seasonal in Emporia, meaning major arterials are largely clear, residential streets are snowpacked and intersections and overpasses are occasionally slick.
Across Lyon County, Deputy Doug Stump says things are returning to normal after a lot of blowing and drifting Thursday.
Gravel roads are slick in spots as well.
There is a chance of refreezing Friday morning with temperatures in the single digits before sunrise, so Emporia Public Works is ready to spot-treat local streets if needed. Temperatures will climb to near 30 degrees, offering more melting, and highs should climb to near 50 degrees Saturday.
