Numbers are interesting. Today I will share a few with you that shocked me. Most of these numbers come from a Facebook post indicating our perspective can be confusing and suggested we need to keep our current situation – the Covid 19 pandemic approaching nearly 6 million deaths worldwide and a real challenge to our form of governance in perspective.
I’m not sure I understand. How about you?
- World War I starts in 1914, ends in 1918 with 22 million killed worldwide.
- The Spanish Flu epidemic hits in 1918, lasts about 2 years and 50 million reportedly die. Yes, 50 million people died!
- The Great Depression starts in 1929, last 4 years with unrepairable damage.
- World War II starts in 1939 with S. becoming fully involved by 1941. 75 million reportedly died – plus 6 million more in the Holocaust.
- Polio reappeared in the United States in 1949. A vaccine has nearly eradicated polio worldwide!
- The Korean War costing 5 million lives started in 1952.
Since I was born we’ve experienced the Cold War, Viet Nam, Aids, seen space travel become common, 9-11 followed by ongoing worldwide terrorist threats, financial ebbs and flow, and many events leading us to Covid 19 which is far from under control.
Throw in what happened at our capital one year ago tomorrow and you have what many believe is a real threat to American democracy and we have a situation worth paying attention to.
Perspective? What’s yours?
