The Mechanic Street underpass is open again to traffic, while access to the Congress Street underpass is still limited Tuesday morning.
The Mechanic Street underpass was closed for several hours Monday afternoon and early evening after a southbound semi got wedged near the south edge of the bridge deck. No injuries were reported. Details about the load are currently pending.
The wreck follows work by Burlington Northern Santa Fe to repair the bridge on the top of the underpass structure. Work lasted nearly two months and ended before Thanksgiving.
Meanwhile, northbound access to the Congress Street underpass is still blocked at Second Avenue after Saturday night’s water main break at Fourth and Congress that took almost 11 hours to fully repair. The intersection is open, thus allowing traffic to go south through the underpass, although there is a sizable cutout that takes up most of the intersection at this time. It could be Friday before that’s repaired.
