Lyon County isn’t the only area county having a sharp spike in COVID cases.
Morris County, which has a population of under 6,000 and recently went over 1,000 total COVID cases, announced 74 new cases over the last five days. Just as troubling: the county’s test positivity percentage is now at 57 percent, above the county’s listed vaccination rate of 53 percent.
Morris County commissioners voted 2-1 to rescind the county’s mask mandate in place since August. Like Lyon County, Morris County is strongly suggesting mask use, vaccinations, hand hygiene and social distancing.
Areawide, Chase County is the only area county with fewer than 1,000 total cases through the pandemic, and as of Monday’s report, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment had Chase County with exactly 500 cases. Osage County, the second-most populous county areawide besides Lyon County, is now approaching 3,000 cases, while Coffey County is nearing 2,000. Greenwood and Wabaunsee counties are both above 1,300 cases.
