If a redistricting map introduced Tuesday in the Senate Redistricting Committee finds favor with both chambers, most of the KVOE listening area could be shifted out of the so-called Big First US Congressional District.
The current map has Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties in the First District. The proposed map slides all four counties to the Second District with Coffey and Osage counties. Under the proposal, Greenwood County stays in the Fourth District.
The map is notable because it was introduced by Senate President Ty Masterson and Senate Vice President Rick Wilborn, the leaders of the Redistricting Committee. They say it reflects public testimony from a listening tour in August and a virtual listening tour in November. They also say it maintains “political fairness” with all four members of Congress staying in the adjusted districts, which they would have won two years ago even under the new boundaries.
Discussion continues in the Kansas Legislature.
