The number of domestic violence cases being handled by the staff of SOS Services have not seen a drastic increase since last year, however, the numbers are still far too high for their liking.
During a recent interview on KVOE’s Morning Show SOS Crisis Services Director Mary discussed domestic violence occurrences in the local community and says while case numbers are not rising drastically, they still assisted over 500 individuals with domestic abuse services over the past year alone. To make matters worse, Mary says the severity of those cases are reaching dangerous levels.
While most individuals think of physical abuse when it comes to domestic violence, Mary reminds everyone that domestic violence is not limited to physical assault.
Another form of abuse that is not discussed at quite the same level as others is financial abuse. Mary says most individuals do not report financial abuse right off the bat and it is normally a situation that is uncovered through conversations with an abuse victim.
Mary adds that many individuals often remain in abusive relationships out of fear of retaliation from the abuser and uncertainty as to where they can go to be safe. That’s where SOS comes into the picture.
Mary explains that SOS will never force an individual to make a decision they are not comfortable with and simply offers options and safety planning to help guide you through your situation. If you, or someone you know may be in a violent relationship contact SOS by calling their 24-hour hotline at 1-800-825-1295.
