For the 101st consecutive year, the Lyon County League is taking over White Auditorium starting Monday.
The LCL basketball tournament kicks off with first-round games at 4 pm inside the auditorium and longtime tournament organizer Ted Vannocker says they will be taking the ongoing COVID-19 surge into account throughout the week.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers had to hold off on several planned activities for last year’s centennial tournament. This includes a recognition of past players, teams and coaches amongst others.
Vannocker says those ceremonies will be a large part of this year’s slate of activities.
The 101st tournament comes as Vannocker is nearing completion of what has been a large undertaking the past several years as he has been compiling a book detailing the first 100 years of the tournament. According to Vannocker, he is in the process of “typing it up” after which it will “head off to the printers.”
Vannocker says the compiled history of the tournament has been a “labor of love” for him.
Monday’s games begin with the Madison Girls playing Hartford at 4 pm with the Madison and Marais Des Cygnes boys to follow. In the late games, the Burlingame girls will take on Southern Coffey County with the Lebo Boys and Southern Coffey County boys to follow.
All games will be broadcast on Country 101.7 fm and KVOE TV at KVOE.com.
