Emporia City Commissioners are weighing their options for a new design on a prominent utility that will welcome visitors to town for the next several decades.
During their recent study meeting Wednesday, commissioners discussed the new logo that will adorn the soon-to-be updated East 12th Ave. elevated water storage tank. While ideas varied from an Emporia State logo to designing the tower to look like a disc golf basket, commissioners all agreed the sign needs to serve as a perfect representation of the city.
Mayor Becky Smith says that is a difficult task considering there are so many things that are synonymous with Emporia.
Ultimately, it was decided that city staff will draw up a trio of possible designs to present to commissioners at their next study session in two weeks. The conversations come after commissioners approved a contract for updates to the aging tower back on Dec. 16.
The project is expected to go out to bid later this year.
In other business, commissioners discussed a pair of change orders from Public Works Director Dean Grant for the Public Works Centers’ ongoing pavement improvement project. The change orders total around $23,000 and Include work to tie in existing drainage with the new concrete project as well as the addition of ten feet of concrete for increased storage capacity on the north end of the facility.
Commissioners may consider approval of both requests during their regular action meeting next week.
In other business, commissioners also received an update from Empower House Ministries and later discussed a new post-construction stormwater ordinance, a sewer use ordinance and an industrial pretreatment program before closing out the meeting with continued conversations on strategic planning matters.
The Emporia City Commission will reconvene for an action session next Wednesday at 1:30 pm inside the Municipal Courtroom at white Auditorium.
