Forecast models are trending towards a notable snowfall for the KVOE listening area this week, and projections are already showing a wider range of snowfall than early-morning model runs.
Winter storm watches are up areawide from 9 pm Tuesday to noon Thursday. As it stands now, the National Weather Service is expecting upwards of 4-10 inches of snow for the area, with at least 5 inches for most area locations including Emporia. Lighter totals are currently setting up northwest of an Elmdale-to-Council Grove-to-Harveyville line.
If the forecast holds, this would be among Emporia’s higher snow totals in recent memory. The last time Emporia had a 6-inch snowfall was a 6.5-inch total on Feb. 5, 2014. The last time Emporia had at least 8 inches of snow was Feb. 9, 2011, when the Municipal Airport recorded 12.6 inches.

5:45 am Monday: Four to eight inches of snowfall possible with incoming winter storm
There is still a fair amount of uncertainty in the details, but forecast models are trending towards a notable snowfall for the KVOE listening area this week.
Winter storm watches are up areawide from 9 pm Tuesday to noon Thursday. As it stands now, the National Weather Service is expecting upwards of 4-8 inches of snow for the area, with 6 inches or more for most area locations including Emporia. Lighter totals are currently setting up northwest of Bushong and Harveyville.
Travel will likely be difficult during the event because of the snow and gusty north winds as high as 30 mph causing near-blizzard conditions at times. Wind chills could also be -10 or lower Wednesday night and Thursday night.
