Travel conditions have improved both in and out of Emporia after moderate snowfall earlier this week.
Emporia city streets had a fair amount of snowpack and some ice early Friday, but that has largely disappeared with sunshine all day and temperatures going above 20 degrees before 11 am. Lyon County roads have been open since early Friday after repeated clearing efforts by the Highway Department. Highway travel is clear with one exception now — Kansas Highway 58 east of Madison is lister as seasonal, meaning isolated to widely scattered snow cover.

6 am Friday: Lyon County road network fully reopened; snowpack and spotty ice still affects several high-traffic streets in Emporia
Emporia’s travel conditions will improve Friday as we have temperatures above freezing for the first time in several days.
There was some improvement Thursday for the city’s arterial streets and more heavily-traveled residential collector streets, but streets were still largely snowpacked Thursday evening, they are still largely snowpacked and there are ice patches where refreezing happened. Public Works Director Dean Grant says crews will be out spot-treating as needed through the day.
It’s a better report for county roads, according to Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles.
Crews with the Lyon County Highway Department had to battle drifts that got as high as three feet, despite ongoing work since early Wednesday to keep roads open.
For highway traffic, www.kandrive.org indicates seasonal driving conditions on the Kansas Turnpike north of Emporia and Interstate 35 from Emporia to the Hartford-Neosho Rapids exit. All other highways are listed as seasonal, meaning isolated to widely scattered snow and ice.
There were long lists of schedule adjustments Wednesday and Thursday. We still have some in effect, but the list is a lot shorter Friday morning. There has been one adjustment to an adjustment. Earlier, Corner House had announced it would be closed Friday. It now says it will be open and all group meetings will take place as normal.
