Over $36,000 is coming to Lyon County’s Emergency Food and Shelter Board, according to the United Way of the Flint Hills.
Lyon County is getting over $8,800 through a standard federal grant funding stream, continuing a lengthy tradition of federal funds benefiting local programs. It’s also getting over $27,000 through the American Rescue Plan Act. Both grants will bolster emergency food and shelter programs countywide. A local board consisting of the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, a representative of the Lyon County Commission, Salvation Army and United Way will now determine how the funds will be allocated.
In the last round of funding, ECKAN, Emporia Rescue Mission and Salvation Army combined to provide over 3,100 meals. They also helped 20 people with rent and mortgage needs.
Agencies chosen for funding must be private nonprofit or government units, be eligible to receive federal funds, have an accounting system, practice nondiscrimination, have a demonstrated capacity to deliver emergency programs and — if a private nonprofit — have a voluntary board.
Public and private entities interested in these funds must call Community Impact Manager Hannah Crowl at 620-342-7564 or email hannah@uwfh.org. The application deadline is Feb. 28.
