Snowfall may be ending soon, but travel issues will likely persist through the day.
Between 3-8 inches of snowfall are still expected across the area, with 6 inches of snow at the KVOE studios Thursday morning. Other totals:
*Burlington: 4.5 inches
*Gridley: 2.7 inches
*Lake Kahola: 2 inches with 3-foot drifts
*Lyndon: 8 inches
The snow has already combined with northerly wind gusts to cause near-blizzard travel conditions, drifting as deep as 4 feet on Lyon County roads and a host of slideoff crashes through the morning hours despite ongoing work by road crews to keep roads clear. Assistant County Engineer Jim Brull says crews are doing their best.
Lyon County Sheriff Jeff Cope says deputies have been busy all morning, with 10 slideoffs just on Interstate 35. Last night’s shift worked until noon instead of the normal 8 am end time, with the day shift ongoing and this evening’s shift coming in early.
Deputies and firefighters also had to respond to a vehicle fire near Roads 300 and L shortly before 11 am.
It’s not much better in the Emporia city limits. Crews are out blading arterials to keep them relatively clear. They will move to the residential collector streets at some point later.
