The announcement of the annual 1863 Essay Contest winners capped off a virtual Founders Day celebration for Emporia State University Friday morning.
English Professor Dr. Mel Storm presented the winning submissions both written by ESU undergraduate students. The first-place winner was junior political science major Abe Lemus with his essay titled “the Power of Emporia State University.”
For coming in first, Lemus was awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Lemus is in the midst of a legislative internship in Washington DC and says it is an opportunity he has always looked forward to.
The second-place essay titled “Saving a Studying Spirit” was written by third-year student Walin Moorsol who received an $863 scholarship. Moorsol comes to Emporia State from Bangladesh by way of Singapore and says there were several factors that brought him to ESU.
In addition to the essay contest winners, Founders Day activities included the distribution of cupcakes across campus and celebratory birthday cake available inside the ESU Memorial Student Union. Friday was the culmination of I love ESU Week which began on Monday.
