Emporia Fire and Kansas gas were called to downtown Emporia on Friday morning after a report of a potential gas leak.
Fire and Kansas Gas investigators went to Emporia Presbyterian Church, 802 Commercial, shortly before 9:30 am after the smell was reported in an upper level of the church. Firefighters say the smell likely originated from sewer gas, not natural gas, and went available soon after getting on site.
Both the church and old preschool area were evacuated briefly. Operations returned to normal by 10 am.
