Tre’Zure Jobes’ basket with 2.6 seconds to play lifted the Emporia State women to a 79-77 win over Washburn Saturday afternoon.
Emporia State held a 17 point lead early in the 3rd quarter only to have Washburn rally to take the lead with a minute 30 to play in the game. Jobe tied the game making 1 of 2 free throws after a technical was given to Washburn Coach Ron McHenry.
Emporia State Coach Toby Wynn was pleased with the way they closed out the game.
Ehlaina Hartman led the offense finishing with 21 points, Tre’Zure Jobe added 17 points, Kali Martin scored 16 points and Victoria Price finished with 16 points.
The Lady Hornets will play Central Oklahoma in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament Wednesday in Kansas City with tipoff at 2:15 pm.
Washburn won the men’s game 85-59. It was a close game until Emporia States leading scorer Tray Buchanan left the game in the first half with a foot injury and never returned.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said that was the turning point.
Tray Buchanan finished 16 points and was the Hornets’ leading scorer. Jumah’Ri Turner added 11 points.
Emporia State will play Washburn again Friday in the MIAA tournament.
