A third time was not a charm for the Emporia State men’s basketball team against Washburn. Washburn outscored the Hornets 88-81 in the quarterfinal round of the MIAA Tournament Friday night.
The game featured 12 lead changes and 11 ties. The game was tied at 35 at halftime. Emporia State started the 2nd half on a 13-5 run. Washburn would answer back to build a 13 point lead with 6 minutes to play. Emporia State would cut the deficit to 3 points several times but could never tie the game or take the lead.
Emporia State Coach Craig Doty said the second-half run by Washburn proved costly.
Jumah’Ri Turner led Emporia State in scoring with 23 points. Tray Buchanan added 22 points. Kaden Evans finished with 12 points and Brenden Van Dyke scored 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Washburn was led by Tyler Geiman and Jaylen Lewis who both scored 20 points.
The Emporia State men finish the season with a 20 and 9 record.
Jumah’Ri Turner will end his career with 1,351 points to move into the top ten on the Emporia State all-time list.
Tray Buchanan finished the season with 742 points to rank fourth all-time in a single season at Emporia State.
Washburn will play Central Oklahoma in one of the men’s semi-finals.
Fort Hays State will play Northwest Missouri State in the other semi-final.
In the women’s semi-finals Saturday – Missouri Southern plays Missouri Western and Fort Hays State plays Nebraska Kearney.
