The 12th Avenue water line improvement project is getting into its second phase this week.
Pavement marking is taking place Wednesday along West 12th from Lincoln to Garfield — and the city of Emporia says westbound traffic on 12th cannot turn south on Lincoln for several weeks as the overall process continues. Traffic control is directing eastbound traffic south on Garfield to get around the work zone.
New 16- to 20-inch PVC pipe is being installed from Chestnut to Grand. This will take out pipe that’s anywhere from 80-100 years old. It also gives Newman Regional Health some redundancy with its water service, following a pipe replacement along West Ninth on the hospital’s south side last year. In addition, it connects with ongoing improvements on 12th east of Prairie following a massive water main break near 15th and Prairie in 2017.
Separately, the Lyon County Highway Department is closing part of the Olpe-Hartford Road next week.
The department is closing Road 75 between Roads N and P-5 to replace a bridge. Work is tentatively set to begin Monday. There is no current estimate on when the road will reopen.
The Highway Department asks residents to not drive around barricades, either for this project or others across the county.
