Friday’s rainfall across the KVOE listening area comes as the US Drought Monitor continues with abnormally dry conditions for most of the KVOE listening area — and with the Kansas Governor’s Office now issuing a drought watch or warning for the area.
Most area counties, Lyon County included, are now in a drought watch. The current exception is Morris County, which is in a drought warning. Counties along the Oklahoma state line are now in a drought emergency.
Thursday’s action, which puts the entire state in some level of drought alert, was recommended by Kansas Water Office Director Connie Owen and is in effect until rescinded by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly. She says most areas are at least three inches below normal precipitation levels the past six months.
More information about the state drought alerts is online at www.kwo.ks.gov.
The US Drought Monitor has the KVOE listening area in abnormally dry conditions, but southeast Greenwood and far west Morris counties are now into moderate drought.
More rainfall is expected Monday afternoon through Wednesday night.
