Formal charges are pending against an Emporia man accused of trying to rob a downtown Emporia convenience store Thursday.
Emporia Police were dispatched to Max’s BP, 202 East Sixth, around 1 pm for a reported robbery. Police Capt. Lisa Hayes says a caller gave a description of a potential suspect and said the person had just left the building on a bike.
With Emporia Police headquarters just across Sixth Avenue, Hayes says officers were at Max’s BP in under a minute and “immediately” found a man matching the suspect description given to police.
Darren Hutcherson, age 57, was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery. Hutcherson has a lengthy list of convictions dating back to 1990, with convictions in Lyon and Sedgwick counties on charges like burglary, theft, flee and elude, robbery and aggravated assault, including assaulting law enforcement.

Emporia Police have arrested an Emporia man on suspected robbery charges.
Emporia Police were called to Max’s BP Convenience Store at 202 E. 6th Ave. around 1 pm for a reported robbery. According to Emporia Police Cpt. Lisa Hayes, the individual who called in the robbery gave a description of a potential suspect and reported the individual had “just left on a bicycle.”
Hayes says officers were on the scene in less than 60-seconds and “immediately” located an individual matching the suspect’s description. The individual, identified as 57-year-old Darren Hutcherson, was arrested on a single charge of attempted robbery.
Hutcherson is in custody at the Lyon County Detention Center at last word. Formal charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
