It was slightly delayed, however, Healthier Lyon County’s newest public safety improvement project is now up and running.
Monday, HLC began installing demonstration pedestrian islands in multiple locations across Emporia that see high amounts of foot traffic from school-aged residents. The locations include 12th Ave. near Washington for Walnut Elementary School, 24th Ave. near Emporia Middle School and Graphic Arts Road near Emporia Middle School all of which were installed before 2:30 pm Monday.
A fourth demo island will be installed at 18th Ave. between Emporia High School and Flint Hills Technical College at noon Tuesday. HLC Grant Manager Daphne Mertens says these islands will remain in place for the next two weeks.
During that time she invites residents to take part in a survey that can be accessed through QR codes on the islands. She says the information gathered through those surveys will have major implications for the future.
The demo islands were funded by HLC’s Chronic Disease Risk Reduction grant through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. The project is a cooperative effort involving the Lyon County Multi-Use Path Planning (MUPP) board and the Flint Hills Metropolitan Planning organization based in Manhattan.
