Local motorists will be happy to know a major traffic zone in Emporia is open once again.
After almost two months, Emporia’s Mechanic Street underpass has reopened to through traffic. Burlington Northern Santa Fe closed the underpass back in February for a round of unspecified repairs.
This followed work on the bridge structure on top of the underpass last fall. The project did have a noticeable impact on local traffic throughout its duration.
This included reports of train traffic moving at a snail’s pace around the work zone including reports of a train stoppage that allegedly lasted 36-hours at one time.
