Evergy is taking the next step in building a new service center near Emporia.
The utility will start construction soon on a new service center in the 600 block of Road 180 about a mile west of Emporia, and an in-person groundbreaking ceremony is taking place at the site from 10-11 am Tuesday.
The 55,000 square-foot building, which will also feature a service yard and parking, will ultimately replace the current service headquarters at 220 Mechanic. The complex is substantially larger than the existing facility, and Evergy says that will lead to better organization and safer work with materials for employees.
Construction should begin later this spring and should be completed by spring 2023, with employees moving into the new complex by summer 2023.
