Several weeks ago, KVOE highlighted the work of a former Emporia State student and Ukrainian native who has been hard at work gathering supplies to assist others as the war in Ukraine rages on.
Vladislav Remeniak sat down with KVOE Sunday, Easter Sunday in Ukraine, to update his efforts and condition. When KVOE spoke with Remeniak at the start of the month he stated he was safe in the city of Lviv where combat was very limited.
Since that time, however, the situation has changed drastically.
The strikes claimed the lives of seven residents and injured 12 including a three-year-old child. As casualties continue to grow, efforts for relief are increasing across the globe including a GoFundMe campaign that began in Emporia to help Vlad secure both medical and essential supplies. The campaign was created by Remeniak’s close friend and Emporia resident Jennifer Baldwin.
According to Baldwin, the fundraiser has reached around $700 since it began. Baldwin says they are hoping to reach around $25,000 and says she knows if she can count on anyone to come through it is the citizens of Emporia.
With the increasing dangers in the country, Baldwin says she and Remeniak have had to have some very difficult conversations in recent weeks, namely what to do with the fundraiser if he were to die.
Baldwin and Remeniak both say regardless of what may happen in the near future the campaign will continue to serve the people of Ukraine and carry on Remeniak’s mission of serving his fellow countrymen.
