Emporia Police say an Emporia man has been arrested following reports of shots fired outside an Emporia school early Monday morning.
Deputy Chief Kevin Risley says the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center started receiving shots fired calls in and around the 900 block of Cottonwood shortly before 3:15 am. Officers, Lyon County deputies and Emporia State Police and Safety officers then set up a perimeter around an apartment complex at 914 Cottonwood, just across the street from William Allen White Elementary.
The shots fired reports from the public followed police contact with Diego Ambriz Cervantes, age 26 of 914 Cottonwood Apartment No. 1, relating an unconnected incident.
Risley says phone conversations and evidence at the scene indicated Cervantes was suspected of unlawfully discharging a firearm. Cervantes refused to answer his door, but eventually surrendered without incident shortly before 6 am after Emporia Police brought a special negotiator to the scene.
The investigation is ongoing. Formal charges are currently pending. Emporia Public Schools says activities at William Allen White continued as normal.
