Dynamic Discs Open tournament organizers say things went well for the tourney that finished in Emporia on Sunday. And they are excited for the Pro Disc Golf Association World Championships coming to Emporia in late August and early September.
Dynamic Discs owner and founder Jeremy Rusco says the tournament’s growth and popularity the past 20 years is a direct indicator of the growth and popularity surrounding disc golf as a whole over that time.
Around 700 players came from around the world to participate. Another 500 are expected for the World Championships between Aug. 30-Sept. 3.
The DDO had a pair of first-time champions, with Ricky Wysocki, signed to Dynamic Discs in the offseason, claiming first in the men’s open division at -10 overall and Kristin Tattar of Estonia winning her first women’s title at even par.
Coronavirus became a story in the second half of the tournament as four players — Matt Orum, Colten Montgomery, Tristan Tanner and Kona Panis were all diagnosed with COVID-19 and withdrew. Montgomery and Tanner were symptomatic, according to the Disc Golf Pro Tour, and contact tracing was enacted. In total, over 50 players were tested. The organization did not announce any other positive cases associated with the tournament.
