Continued rainfall across portions of the listening area has led the National Weather Service to extend a flood warning in southern Greenwood County.
The warning, originally set to expire at 1 am Friday, has now been extended through 1 pm Friday afternoon. This includes the city of Eureka in the KVOE listening area.
Rainfall and related flooding could make some roadways impassable. If you come across a roadway with over the top you’re reminded to turn around don’t drown.
Stay with KVOE, KVOE.com and KVOE social media for more updates as they become available.
11:13 am Thursday: WEATHER: With flooding possible, residents encouraged to use new statewide reporting tool
The risk of at least isolated flooding has Lyon County Zoning and Floodplain Administrator Sam Seeley reminding residents about a new online tool that helps residents report flooding and the county plan ahead for future issues.
The Flood Observation Reporting Tool, or FORT, is available online at www.ks.gov by finding the Recurring Flood ID Project — and by going online to the county’s website, www.lyoncounty.org. Seeley says you’ll look for what’s called the “Observed Flooding Report.”
Once online, residents need to select the “Add Flood Location,” select the severity level and then draw a square or polygon that best shows the flooding area. Residents will also be asked to list the type of flood, if water rescues were needed, how often the area floods and other kinds of information.
The FORT tool, available statewide, could lead to area-specific awareness efforts. Seeley says this could make it easier for county officials to determine where to raise roads, add drainage or add other flood mitigation efforts.
