A spike in gas prices is coming as residents across Kansas make plans for summer travel.
Kansas AAA is expecting a robust summer season, whether it’s on the roads or in the air. Gas prices are now just under $4 a gallon at most local and area gas stations, but AAA Public and Government Affairs Manager Shawn Steward doesn’t expect people to cancel their travel plans — at least when it comes to paying for gas. Other adjustments? Those are quite possible.
On Wednesday, regular unleaded gas was generally between $3.75 and $3.80 per gallon. Now it’s as high as $3.99. Diesel, meanwhile, is now as high as $5.49 a gallon at Emporia service stations. Gas prices across the KVOE listening area are also spiking, ranging anywhere from $3.77 to $3.99.
Statewide, the average is $3.91 gallon, which is actually sixth-best across the country. The record of $4.02 per gallon was set in July 2008.
Steward says several factors are playing into higher prices, including reduced supply of domestic stocks, increasing demand with the summer driving season approaching and rising oil prices set to stay above $105 per barrel for the foreseeable future. With the market volatility, Steward says it’s not out of the question to see gas go above $4 a gallon across Kansas.
